A genuine fishing village on the Costa de la Luz, with wide-open beaches, the Breña Natural Park right next door and the Trafalgar Lighthouse a short drive away — the gateway to Zahara de los Atunes and Caños de Meca.
Harbour and almadraba
Barbate is, together with Zahara de los Atunes, one of Spain's great almadraba ports — the traditional way of catching bluefin tuna with fixed nets. Its fish market and canning industry have been tied to tuna for generations, and spring (April–June) is the best time to try it fresh off the boat.
Beaches and nature
Barbate's beach is long and open to the Atlantic, and to the south it connects with the Breña and Marismas del Barbate Natural Park: stone-pine cliffs over the sea, trails with spectacular views, and the Trafalgar Lighthouse at the end of the cape — the place that gives its name to the famous 1805 naval battle.

From Barbate you can reach Caños de Meca (unspoilt, bohemian beaches), Zahara de los Atunes and Vejer de la Frontera — one of the prettiest white villages in Cádiz, perched on top of a hill — in just a few minutes.
